Career:

Mark Dempsey was admitted in 1983. He was employed by Allen Allen & Hemsley in Sydney for 6 years before being admitted to the Bar in 1988 and appointed Senior Counsel in 2004.

Mark is the Chair of the Australian Bar Association’s International Committee and has a keen interest in practice in Asia and fostering closer professional links between the professions in Australian and throughout Asian.

Mark is one of Australia’s leading barristers specialising in major construction, engineering and infrastructure disputes throughout Australia and Asia. Mark has extensive experience in advising and appearing in relation to a broad range of complex commercial and equity disputes at trial and appellate level.

Mark possesses a wealth of experience in all forms of dispute resolution, including international and commercial arbitration, mediation and expert determination. He has appeared in complex, multi-million-dollar international arbitrations in Singapore and Australia as counsel, and practices as an arbitrator and mediator in Australia, Singapore and Malaysia.

Mediation:

Mediation is an essential, and increasingly popular, element of dispute resolution in all commercial disputes including international disputes.

Mark has enjoyed an active involvement in the conduct and promotion of mediation and ADR procedures throughout his career including as a former member of the NSW Bar ADR committee.

Mark has mediated or appeared as counsel in a great number of mediations around Australia and also in Singapore.

In August 2019, Mark had the privilege of attending the signing ceremony for the Singapore Convention on Mediation representing the President of the Australian Bar Association.

Asia:

Mark has enjoyed a close and ongoing professional association with Asia over many years since his admission as Fellow of the CIArb through the Singapore Branch in 2012, has appeared in arbitrations and mediations in Singapore, and attending many conferences and professional events in Singapore and Jakarta. Mark is a panel mediator with the Asian International Arbitration Centre (formerly KLRCA) and Fellow of the Asian Institute of Alternative Dispute Resolution.
